CUT YOUR GAS BILLS....GET A WOOD BURNING STOVE INSTALLED
Below is a small selection of quality hand made oak beams and mantels we supply and fit at the time of installing a wood burning stove. These beams are from a carefully selected british manufacturer to ensure a consistent high quality finish.
You have a choice of five colours ranging from a light natural Oak through to a dark rich Jacobean Oak. The colour is made from applying pigmented waxes with heat into the beam and buffing to a soft sheen.
The pictures below depict the five main colours. The examples are representational and allowances should be made for lighting and photographic processes. There are other ways in which we can colour a beam and these are described below.
The clear wax will provide a rich sheen and allow the natural Oak colours to be seen. As the Oak is a character grade, the knots, cracks and natural pigments within your Oak beam may change its appearance.
The antique wax slightly darkens and provides a more mellow and slight golden appearance. The same sheen level is apparent on all the finishing waxes used. A more 'dull' finish is also availble.
A popular choice with most of our customers. It offers a mid-way colour that blend itself with most decors and tastes. This is the most popular Oak beam colour.
A more nutty and authentic colour depending on the 'look' you are trying to acheive
The darkest of the waxes provides a deep rich colour as pictured.
The style of the Oak beam can dramatically alter the characteristics and overall appearance. There are various degrees of adzing that creates contours and curves along the edges of the beam to get the right effect you desire.
The four options you can choose from are as follows:
PSE stands for 'planed, square edged'. Some people know this are PAR 'planed all round'. These are the same and it creates a clean square edged beam. All six faces are cut and planed to a smooth finish.
This effect has slight undulations applied to the corners of the Oak beam creating a softened appearance
A more wavey appearance on the underneath edge can be created to exaggerate the edges and looks better when a darker colour of wax is used.
The adzing is random on all corners and the face is also mis-shaped to create a more authentic aged appearance. The picture below shows additional features such as brushing, flaming and artificial pegs.
If needed, more texture, additional aged colours, arches and a selection of oiled finished can be added.
The Oak beam can be given some texture by wire brushing the grain to leave a raised texture
Aged colours (fuming)
As Oak becomes older, the darker it becomes. A fuming procedure enables a reaction with the Oak to create a truly authentic aged colour. This is not a stain and the colour, depending on the length of time it is fumed for, is absorbed into the Oak for years to come.
Pegs & Woodworm
Additional raised pegs and artificial woodworm can be added for a true reclaimed look.
Corbels or brackets cam be added if need be. As these Oak beams are made to measure, the design, dimensions and location needs to be discussed to ensure the right effect is created.
A lazy arch can be applied to the underneath of a beam creating an arched effect, which is normally created in the middle. Should this be a requirement, further dimensions of where the arch is to start and stop are required.
Most Oak beams are finished in a coloured wax. However, a more natural and matt appearance can be created using an oil finish. This can be applied to a natural or fumed piece of Oak.
